The Nobel Laureates’ Campaign Supporting GMOs
نویسنده
چکیده
More than 800 million people suffer from hunger in the world. Using modern plant breeding methods to generate so-called GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms), agricultural scientists have shown that crop yields and nutritional quality can be greatly improved. Many GMO varieties have been specifically developed with the aim of being resistant to pests, tolerant to drought and containing beneficial nutrients. This leads to a reduction in the use of insecticides in water and on land. If anything, the GMO varieties are safer than traditionally bred varieties because they are made in a very precise manner. However, the scientific evidence on this issue is being ignored by the Green Parties such as Greenpeace who continue to deny the science and mislead the public. 129 Nobel Laureates have joined in a campaign to convince the Green Parties and the public that they should support the use of GMOs, especially for the sake of the

Gender and Science: Women Nobel Laureates
Women and their creativity are underrepresented in science. To date, few women have been awarded the Nobel Prize in science. Eleven female Nobel laureates in physics, chemistry and physiology/medicine between 1901 and 2006 were compared with 37 males who received the Nobel Prize in the same area one year prior and one year after the women. Data analyzed included birth order, marital status, chi...
متن کاملNobelitis: a common disease among Nobel laureates?
Winning a Nobel Prize is a great personal achievement. Some Nobel laureates may consider that their award is a certificate of competence in any field. This may prompt them to undertake projects or accept positions which are beyond their capabilities. Since Nobels are awarded when the laureates have usually passed their prime, caution should be exercised when these individuals are offered highly...
متن کاملNobel numbers: Time-dependent centrality measures on coauthorship graphs
A time-dependent centrality metric for disciplinary co-authorship graphs, the “Nobel number” for a discipline, is introduced. A researcher's Nobel number for a given discipline in a given year is defined as the researcher's average co-authorship distance to that discipline's Nobel laureates in that year. Plotting Nobel numbers over several decades provides a quantitative as well as visual indic...
متن کاملThoughts on uncitedness: Nobel laureates and Fields medalists as case studies
Contrary to what one might expect, Nobel laureates and Fields medalists have a rather large fraction (10% or more) of uncited publications. This is the case for (in total) 75 examined researchers from the fields of mathematics (Fields medalists), physics, chemistry, and physiology or medicine (Nobel laureates). We study several indicators for these researchers, including the h-index, total numb...
متن کاملDoes chocolate consumption really boost Nobel Award chances? The peril of over-interpreting correlations in health studies.
A correlation observed between chocolate consumption and the number of Nobel laureates has recently led to the suggestion that consuming more chocolate would increase the number of laureates due to the beneficial effects of cocoa-flavanols on cognitive functioning. We demonstrate that this interpretation is disproved when other flavanol-rich nutriment consumption is considered. We also show the...
